A time to heal
UNISON South East condemns the violence and disorder seen in Southampton on Tuesday evening.
There can be no justification for violence by individuals or groups to exploit grief and tragedy in order to divide communities or spread fear.
Comments made by the leader of Reform UK have only inflamed tensions and deepened divisions. Political leaders must act with responsibility and help bring communities together.
Many of our members who work to keep the public safe will be concerned by extremists seeking to exploit these events to create tension and division.
To our members, we want to be clear: your union stands with you.
Our communities are strongest when good people come together and seek to heal after moments of great tragedy.
At moments like this, leadership means choosing unity over division, compassion over anger and solidarity over fear.
We encourage branches to engage with members, particularly those who feel vulnerable at this time, and continue promoting our values in workplaces and communities.
If members have any concerns, please contact your steward or branch.
