A UNISON briefing that sets out key asks for the bill, which was introduced to Parliament on 8 June 2022

The Social Housing Regulation Bill aims to raise safety standards, strengthen regulation, and ensure social landlords are more accountable to tenants in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy.
UNISON welcomes measures in the Bill which seek to improve the quality of existing social
homes, and rebalance the relationship between residents and landlords to ensure that
residents’ voices are heard, and the disrepair and safety issues they report are resolved
quickly and efficiently.
UNISON’s key asks:
- Extend strong regulation and enforcement across all rented housing, not just social landlords.
- Provide adequate funding so councils and housing associations can meet new duties.
- End ‘Right to Buy’ to protect and rebuild social housing stock.
- Support investment in new and existing social homes, including retrofitting and safety works.
