Renters’ Rights Bill: House of Lords second reading

A UNISON briefing for House of Lords peers at the second reading, outlining UNISON’s key asks and demands
Date posted: 1 January 2025

UNISON supports key provisions in the bill, including the crucial ban on Section 21 evictions. However, we believe the bill must be strengthened to truly protect tenants, many of whom are lower-paid workers and essential public service staff.

We advocate for measures to stabilise rent increases, enhance tenant protections, and critically, provide local authorities with adequate resources for effective enforcement.

Furthermore, the bill must address discriminatory practices that create barriers to housing, including the abolition of Right to Rent checks. These reforms are not just about improving tenant security; they are about protecting our public sector workforce, ensuring the delivery of vital public services, and creating a fair and accessible private rental market for all.
