NMC independent culture review - UNISON response, July 2024

A UNISON response to the July 2024 independent review of the culture of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which identified that many staff do not feel safe speaking up and that many are the victims of discrimination

Date posted: 31 July 2024

UNISON is dismayed and angered by the findings of the independent review, which demonstrates that racism, bullying and discrimination are rife and that the failings of the organisation are undermining patient safety, safeguarding, and the right to fairness expected by registrants who are investigated.

It is extremely stressful for anyone to be investigated by the NMC and the regulator should always be highly cognisant of this. UNISON’s sympathies are with the families of those who have died by suicide whilst being investigated.

UNISON welcomes the plan that the current NMC chair and leadership will ‘rebuild confidence, protect the public and ensure all nurses and midwives will be treated fairly’.

UNISON also expects to see justice for victims and accountability for the perpetrators of bullying, racism and discrimination.
