A national care service for Wales
A UNISON Cymru Wales and Association for Public Service Excellence Report report on how a publicly owned national care service would help resolve the failing social care system
Date posted:
19 October 2022
Wales’ social care system is failing because it relies heavily on private, profit‑driven providers, leading to understaffing, low pay, poor conditions and large amounts of public money leaking out of the system.
A national care service will only succeed if care is directly provided by public bodies, not merely commissioned from the market. Public provision would reduce profit extraction, improve transparency, stabilise the workforce and deliver consistent, high‑quality, free‑at‑the-point‑of-use care aligned with the principles of the NHS.
