Joint statement on Social Work England’s increase in registration fee

BASW, the Social Workers Union (SWU) and UNISON jointly express deep concern over Social Work England’s decision to increase the annual registration fee by 33%
Date posted: 1 September 2025

BASW, the professional association for social work and social workers, the Social Workers Union (SWU) and UNISON strongly oppose the decision by Social Work England to increase annual registration fees for social workers from £90 to £120, due to financial pressures on social workers and major concerns about poor consultation.

The organisations calls for action:

  • Intervention by the Professional Standards Authority to review the flawed consultation.
  • Start of the overdue statutory five‑year review of Social Work England’s performance.
  • Press MPs to challenge the fee rise and lack of transparency.
  • Comprehensive evaluation of Social Work England’s performance during review.
