Eco-ableism and disability equality

A UNISON briefing

Date posted: 21 November 2025

Briefing outline

Eco-ableism is the exclusion of disabled people from climate policies and action. Many environmental initiatives fail to meet accessibility needs, despite disabled people being disproportionately affected by climate impacts.

We are calling for inclusive climate action and urging branches to involve disabled members. Carrying out equality impact assessments will help ensure environmental policies are accessible, fair and do not create new barriers.
