Changes to the structure of the school year (Welsh government)
Support staff rely on school holidays for additional income or recovery from demanding workloads

UNISON response
These proposals are a distraction from the real challenges facing schools – staff shortages, excessive workloads and reduced budgets. Changing the school year was consistently ranked as the lowest priority for improving education and staff wellbeing when we surveyed school support staff.
There is no clear link between shorter summer holidays and improved learning outcomes. Instead, we need investment in staffing, pay and working conditions to support learners and the education workforce.
