Support for equality reps

Information and resources to help you promote equality and tackle discrimination in the workplace

Understanding your role

Equality representatives aim to make sure people are treated fairly at work and do not suffer from discrimination on grounds such as race, gender, sexuality, gender identity, disability, age, creed or social class. (list taken from Rulebook A3) They:

  • work with their branch to improve workplace and employer equality policies;
  • campaign for equality in the workplace and the union;
  • promote national campaigns such as International Women’s Day, LGBT History Month and Black History Month;
  • Work with other reps to ensure their branch is inclusive and accessible;
  • Raise awareness of and talk to members about UNISON’s self-organised groups and forums.

What you can do in your role

As an equality rep, you will provide information and support for members, keep them up to date with union issues and campaigns and encourage them to be involved in local negotiations.

You can act as an adviser and sounding board for members about workplace equality issues and can advise, share information or connect them with support elsewhere in the union. Reps also act as a link between members, other union representatives and the national organisation.
