Support for dependents of deceased members
In the event of a member’s death, UNISON can provide advice and financial support to families and dependents
Support for dependents when a UNISON member dies
UNISON offers various forms of support to members’ families and dependents in the event of a member's death, including death benefit, financial assistance, practical support, and access to resources related to grief and bereavement.
Claiming death benefit
You can claim UNISON death benefit by filling in a Death Benefit Form below and returning it to your local UNISON regional branch by email or post.
Accessing pensions
If your deceased loved one worked in the NHS or for local government, you may be able to access their pension. Find out more at:

If the deceased member worked for a different organisation, you can ask their local branch for advice. Find their local branch using our branch finder tool, and entering the employer's name.
You may also be entitled to a death in service payment, if a loved one dies before they retire.
There for You
UNISON’s welfare charity, There for You, also offers support, including help with funeral costs, hardship grants and more. If you are a partner or dependent of the deceased member you can take up any of the services they offer to members.
For more general financial help and advice, you can email them at [email protected] or leave a message by calling them on 020 7121 5620.
