Tackling NHS backlogs must begin with a proper pay rise

Stopping exodus of staff and attracting recruits is key

Date posted: 10 June 2021

Commenting on new NHS England figures published today (Thursday) showing extensive waiting times for procedures, UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said:

“Clearing these lengthy backlogs is no easy feat. Patients are facing years of discomfort waiting for the sort of complex diagnoses, treatment and surgery that can only be done by the NHS.

“That’s why it’s so important to support and retain the existing workforce, many of whom are burnt out and completely demoralised.

“A proper pay rise is a priority in stopping the exodus of staff, making them feel valued and recruiting more people into the NHS to fill the vacancies.”
