Bank pay changes should not become a race to the bottom, says UNISON
Commenting on changes in pay for NHS bank staff across Kent and Medway, UNISON South East regional organiser Abbey Hampshire-Boswell said “Standardising bank pay across Kent and Medway must not become a race to the bottom. Reducing rates risks driving experienced NHS bank staff away at a time when services can least afford it.
“Bank workers play a crucial role in keeping services running safely, and many rely on this work as their main income. Any changes should be about improving conditions, not cutting pay for those already on the lowest incomes.
“The NHS is already struggling with widespread staffing shortages and rising demand. Cutting pay risks fuelling a damaging cycle of vacancies, burnout and staff leaving, when what’s needed is investment to grow the workforce, not shrink it.
“Employers must engage properly with unions to ensure patient safety is not put at risk.”
