Pension breakthrough for Livewell Southwest staff is a major step forward
Health workers providing community services around Plymouth are a step closer to securing a fairer retirement after their employer agreed to apply to join the NHS Pension Scheme, says UNISON today (Wednesday).
The decision by the board of Livewell Southwest follows a campaign by staff to receive the same pension arrangements as people employed directly by the NHS.
Workers are worried about financial security and the unfair nature of different retirement deals depending on their employer.
UNISON says the move is a significant milestone on the road to pension equality and reflects the determination of workers to be treated fairly.
The application process is expected to take up to nine months. During this time, the union says it will continue to ensure staff get the best deal.
UNISON South West regional secretary Tim Roberts said: “This is a clear example of what happens when workers stand together and demand fairness. Staff made their voices heard and the employer has listened.
“Access to the NHS Pension Scheme is about fairness, dignity and security in retirement. No one delivering vital health services should feel they’re being left behind.”
UNISON South West regional organiser Emily Gallagher said: “After a lengthy campaign on behalf of hundreds of staff, this is a significant step towards pension parity for those delivering vital NHS services.
“These workers deserve the same financial security in retirement as colleagues elsewhere in the NHS.”
