Colleagues Returning from Parental Leave Find Strength in Peer Support

In September 2025, at Buckinghamshire Health Care we launched an invaluable initiative aimed at supporting colleagues returning to work after maternity leave.

This peer support group, initiated by Saba Hussain, Business Manager for the Emergency Floor, addresses the emotional and professional challenges that many parents face during their transition back to work.

Saba shared her own experience of returning to work after her second maternity leave in May 2025, stating:

“As I returned to work after my second maternity leave… I realised just how much had changed within my team and the organisation.

“At the end of my first week back, I felt overwhelmed with emotions – anxiety, eagerness, guilt, and a sense of loss all at once. Taking the time to reflect on these feelings, I recognised that I wasn’t alone, as many other colleagues might also be navigating similar challenges.”

This realisation motivated her to approach the executive management and wellbeing teams to propose a collaborative effort in establishing this support group.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. One attendee expressed:

“Whilst I love my work, I found returning from my second maternity leave very challenging. I had lost my confidence at work and felt like I was expected just to slot right back in where I’d left off over a year ago. My managers were supportive, but at the time no-one else in my team had recently returned from maternity leave so I felt quite alone in my feelings.”

She emphasised the value of the support group, adding:

“I’ve really valued attending the Support Group for Colleagues Returning from Maternity Leave, to hear how others have found this transition, to share experiences and also to share with each other what has helped in this journey.”

The group convenes virtually on MS Teams every third Thursday of the month from 1-2 PM, fostering an inclusive environment for discussion and support.
