Nurses at Nuffield Health lose jobs at Christmas, says UNISON

As many as 180 nurses and other clinical staff at a London hospital run by Nuffield Health will lose their jobs at Christmas, says UNISON.

A demonstration backed by the union and the RCN will be held today (Friday) by the workers to oppose the redundancies.

Nuffield health is selling the building’s lease back to the NHS, but the private health group only informed staff of the closure in October, says UNISON.

The union says none of the staff have been offered alternative employment such as jobs at other sites run by Nuffield Health.

The hospital will be handed back to Barts Health NHS Trust, with the building expected to be repurposed as a breast cancer centre from 2026.

UNISON London regional organiser Pam Okuns-Edokpayi said: “Letting staff go just before Christmas is no way to repay dedicated workers for their commitment and contribution to patient care.

“The employer has refused to listen to any alternatives, including redeployment to other Nuffield Health sites.

“It’s not too late for them to do the right thing and work with UNISON to find a solution.”
