University staff at Imperial College London strike for fair pay

University staff at Imperial College London have begun two days of strike action today (25 November) in a dispute over the College’s below-inflation pay offer.

The walkout follows months of negotiations in which Imperial imposed a 2% pay rise for 2025–26 — a figure far below current inflation and one that UNISON says amounts to yet another real-terms pay cut for the vital staff who keep the university running.

UNISON members joined colleagues from the Joint Trade Unions (UNISON, UCU and Unite) on picket lines across campus this morning to demand a fair and sustainable offer. Staff say they have endured years of falling real-terms pay while facing intense workloads and rising living costs.

UNISON regional organiser Boyana Petrovich said: “Imperial College London is not facing the same challenges most Higher Education institutions in the UK are.

“It is financially stable with billions in assets and a bright future, it can and should do better for its staff.

“Investing in staff is essential to maintaining the high-quality services the university relies on.”

UNISON remains committed to negotiating, and urges the College to return to the table with a meaningful pay proposal that reflects the vital work staff carry out every day.
