Save New Tyne: UNISON Opposes Closure of Worthing Dementia Care Home

UNISON is calling on West Sussex County Council to halt plans to close New Tyne, a council-run dementia care home in Worthing, which provides vital support for residents with complex needs.

The council claims the service is too costly and the building requires significant investment. But UNISON West Sussex and local families argue that New Tyne delivers exceptional, person-centred care that can’t simply be replaced elsewhere.

Staff face redeployment, and residents risk losing the stability and familiarity essential to their wellbeing. No formal public consultation has taken place, and serious concerns have been raised about the decision-making process.

We are urging the council to pause the closure, consult fully with stakeholders, and explore alternatives that protect both jobs and care standards.
