So, at the heart of The Living Wage Campaign lies an ethical argument to tackle in-work poverty and blunt the worst excesses of exploitation through low wages.
Calculated every year by reference to the cost-of-living facing workers, it is now paid by over 16,000 UK employers.
The Living Wage Week is an annual celebration of the Living Wage, organised by The Living Wage Foundation, which raises the profile of the wage after the new rate is announced in autumn.
UNISON is a Living Wage employer and puts the Living Wage centre stage as a minimum rate for pay scales as part of many pay claims.
