End the exploitation of home carers in Cardiff
Home care workers told Cardiff Council the truth:
16-hour shifts for poverty pay.
Months without a day off.
Migrant workers charged up to £25,000 for visas.
Staff pushed into hospital with stress and exhaustion.
Most home care workers in Cardiff are on employer-tied visas. These staff were invited by the UK Government to take key roles in social care in the face of a recruitment crisis in 2022. However, if sponsored care workers leave an abusive employer or report the company for exploitation, they risk losing the right to stay in the UK with their families. This has created the conditions for fear, exploitation and modern-day slavery in a key public service.
After pressure from UNISON members, Cardiff Council signed our Care Worker Charter and promised to tackle exploitation, guarantee fair pay in new contracts and change a system that currently rewards the cheapest providers.
We are hosting a public meeting in October to hold the Council to account on these promises.
