Effective organising needs a plan

Organising framework

The Organising Framework is an annual joint evaluation and planning process for every UNISON branch in partnership with the Regional Organiser. The process agrees an annual branch development plan to be implemented throughout the year to build and maintain a strong and powerful branch. Please speak with your branch secretary for further information.

Outside of the Organising Framework process there are two planning templates that can help you plan effective organising projects, campaigns and activities.

Base organising plan

The Organising to Win Impact Assessment is a planning template and guide for base organising activity. The guide encourages you to consider both the equalities and the organising impact of planned union activities and then amend them where necessary to maximise organising outcomes like an increased branch profile and growth in membership and activism.

You can then use the template to set out goals and objectives followed by actions and the timeline for delivery. The template includes an evaluation section to ensure key lessons are captured for continuous improvement. The template and guide can be found on the Organising to Win resources page.

Strategic organising plan

UNISON’s 5-phase plan to win template and guide is a strategic organising planning document, for when bargaining alone will not be enough. The guide sets out the 5 stages required to build member engagement and participation in an escalating plan to achieve a material win.

When applied correctly, the plan has a very high rate of success. But strategic organising is not without risk and requires resource, so please discuss with your branch and region before launching any strategic organising activity.
