Branch Vision Project

Find out how to strengthen your branch by following our branch development process

UNISON speaking up for public services

The Branch Vision Project is a branch development process that recognises a strong union is built of strong branches.

The Organising to Win branch shifts the balance of power to UNISON members though four stages of organising activity incorporated into the everyday running of the branch.

High-density membership with broad member participation and a strategic organising methodology enables the branch to win. Initially to defend against employer attacks and then to advance the collective interest of members with renewed purpose and power.

Regular wins further build member density, engagement and confidence to participate and builds the activist base. Individual demands on the branch are reduced as employers take a more measured approach to industrial relations.

Case work is further reduced by organising to resolve the root causes. Individual cases that do arise are handled by an extensive steward base built through high levels of member participation with trained and active pathways into activist roles.

Branch officers then shift their focus to strategic leadership – building the Branch’s collective capacity to deliver regular material wins for members.

Any branch can become an Organising to Win branch by fully implementing each of the four stages.

  • The “Why Organise?” audit and workshop.
  • Grow Member Density with recruitment of new starters and retention of potential leavers.
  • Increase participation and activism with a network of active members and new activists.
  • Organising to Win to successfully defend and further member’s interests at local level.

More details on the four stages and how the branch can access further guidance and support can be found on the Organising to Win resources page
